Using Masks in ZBrush 2024

Masking in ZBrush is an essential tool for 3D modeling that allows you to protect or isolate parts of your model while working on other areas. Here’s a quick guide to get started:

What is masking?

Masking is a technique that allows you to select specific areas of your model to protect them from being edited or sculpted. This is useful when you need to work on details without affecting other parts of your model.

How to Mask:

  1. Activate the mask mode.
    • Select the Move or Standard tool.
    • Hold down the Ctrl key (Windows) or Cmd key (Mac).
  2. Draw the mask:
    • With the Ctrl/Cmd key held down, draw directly on the model to apply the mask. The masked areas will appear in a darker color.
  3. Invert the mask:
    • If you want to work only on the masked areas, you can invert the mask by pressing Ctrl/Cmd + I.
  4. Smooth the mask:
    • While holding the Ctrl/Cmd key, click on the mask to smooth the edges. This is useful for avoiding harsh transitions on the model.
  5. Remove the mask:
    • To remove the mask, simply hold down the Ctrl/Cmd key and drag over any empty space on the canvas.

Additional Tips:

  • Mask by Polygroups: Use the mask by Polygroups if your model is divided into different sections or colors. Hold down Ctrl/Cmd and click on a Polygroup to mask it completely.
  • Using masks for sculpting details: Masks are especially useful for sculpting fine details, such as wrinkles or scars, without affecting the surrounding areas.

Practical Exercise:

  • Load a simple model, such as a sphere.
  • Practice drawing masks and sculpting only on the selected areas.
  • Try smoothing, inverting, and removing masks to familiarize yourself with these tools.

With practice, you’ll master masking and take your ZBrush modeling skills to the next level. Happy sculpting!
